Of the seven species of giant marine turtles found globally, five species – the Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Olive Ridley and the Green Turtle can be observed in Sri Lanka. The peak period for turtles nesting is from February to July. Set off at nightfall to Rekuwa beach near Tangalle in the deep south, and silently observe these endangered marine turtles as they come ashore to nest. The process of marine turtles nesting, hatchlings being born, and swimming back to sea is an ancient and phenomenal ritual that is fascinating to observe.
